mabu is the creative platform of the 22 year old danish passionate graphic designer, Mads Burcharth. Graduated in april 2008 from SDE College, Center of Visual Communications with a major in Digital Media.

We would like to share with you, a few words about the making of these amazing identities.

LogoFromDreams: How did you get started in logo design and how long have you been doing it for?

Mads: Bum bum... That's a good question. I've been doing idents
professionally for about 3–4 years now. Ma' mom has always been this
innovative and creative business/entrepreneur kinda women, so I must have
been getting the creative gene from her. Anywho, because of her job, where
she's been involved in so many cool projects, I've been lucky enough to
help her out with a lot of graphic work such as graphic presentations,
typography and later... full corporate idents. I think that's where it all
started.

LogoFromDreams: Can you please guide us through a typical logo design project from start to finish?

Mads: I use the following process. Let's call it 'The Process of Making
Something Awesome With More Awesome on it':

Reseach;
The first thing I do is the research. You have to dig in or else the
fingerprint you're making will be untraceble.

Moodboard/keywords;
It's easier (for me) to visualize, if you have some keywords about the
project written down and collected some inspirational images from the web,
if possible.

Time to play/sketching/create;
I'm sketching freely until I'm running out of ideas. Give the ideas a day
or two and return. That's really important for me to get some fresh eyes
on it. Now I'm able to select and circle up 4–5 designs which I'm either
going to scan onto my computer or just digitally recreating the initial
ideas in Illustrator.

Combination equals result;
This is where I clean up the mess from the previous steps. You know
pencils, erasers, old mokka cups and the old nasty socks laying around.
Just joking, I'm super tidy(No, I'm not). What I'm actually doing in this
step is preparing the finished concept I've picked out and present it to
the client.

LogoFromDreams: Where do you get your inspiration?

Mads: It sounds so cliche-ish to say, but the actual general inspiration
comes from everyday life. I'm surrounded by nice creative people everyday.
Otherwise, the use of books, music, films, networks, the web and the most
important one – playing around – is a really good source too.

LogoFromDreams: What kind of logo design project will always be your favourite?

Mads: There are so many, but if I have to pick only one, then it has to be
the “Families” identity by Herb Lubalin. That's how you play with a word
and make it self-descriptive. He's such a big inspiration, both for his
typographic work but also for the identities where he's been the primus
motor.

Here is an amazing selection of his typographic identity work:

Really amazing. What do you think about it?
