Description: Next Logo

Hello LFD crew and readers! My name is Alen Pavlovic better known as Type08. I live in Croatia where I own a company called Artra for the last 11 years. We deal with a lot of stuff, from graphic, product and interior design to marketing. I am also doing a lot of freelance work lately on this huge global market using internet as a wonderful tool for communication and business. Logodesign and branding are my great passions and doing it I got featured on many design inspiration websites and blogs as in books about graphic and logo design.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO WORLD OF LOGO DESIGN?

I did my first 'fake' logo when I was about 8 years old! It was a game then but it turned out that that 'game' pays most of my bills today. My father is a product designer and I learned a lot about different design aspects from him. Later, I was doing a lot of logos at my own, domestic market, but really wanted to try it on international level. And here I am, about only a year later and more then 50 big and interesting branding and logo design projects for clients from all over the world, I am doing this interview with you here!

HOW IMPORTANT IS A LOGO?

Imagine me saying here that it's not that important at all? Hehee, that would be interesting. Kidding a bit. Of course it's important. If your communication with the rest of the world is important to you, then the logo will be very important as well, being a core of the visual aspects of it. Logo is a core of your company/brand/organization visual identity, it will communicate your 'point' and vision, it will evoke feelings, it will direct the rest of the branding system in the means of visual interpretation. If you want to be different and original but also heard off and remembered, you need a good logo!

WHAT MAKES A GREAT LOGO?

Logo that succeeds in doing the things I mentioned in the last answer is a great logo. It can be simple or megacomplex, monocolor or bursting with colors, logo as an combination of the mark and text or logotype as originally designed wordmark, it doesn't matter at all as long as it's doing the job: presenting you and your vision the best!

YOUR FAVOURITE LOGO MADE BY YOU

I have to say that 'Moving Water' logo is my favorite so far. I have like Top10 where all could be at the 1st place, but I think that this one really describes MY logo design vision the best!

YOUR FAVOURITE LOGO MADE BY OTHER DESIGNER

Since I know who will participate in your Logo Designer Week (hahaa, I got some connections, it was stronger then me) maybe it would be original to mention favorite logos of the guys featured here (in alphabetical order):

Bojan (Logoholik) - Tmiint, very nice use of transparency effect, which I don't use or like that much, but this one made me reconsider it once again,
Josiah (Siah-Design) - Ed's Electric, pure instant classic,
Kevin (Ocularink) - Maven, so extremely simple yet so amazingly strong,
Gareth (Down With Design) - Avifauna, incredible balance and execution,
Mads (Mabu) - Wallen, some nice craftsmanship going on there,
Sean (Fogra) - Castle Print, not only the best 'print' logo I have ever seen, but one of the best new logos over all at the moment.

Other then this, my Top3 favorite logos of all times are: Superman, Lufthansa and Nike

CHEAP LOGOS: YES OR NO? WHY?

No, No, No! If the logo is extremely cheap, below the professional level, it won't be done professionally and that means it won't be strong enough to complete it's mission! There's a huge responsibility behind the visual communication because it directly effects the success of your market (or social) presence overall. It's not something to play with, it should be done proper. The more concrete question would probably be: what is CHEAP when it comes to logo design?

We are all aware of the huge global economy crisis at the moment, but in my personal opinion, every business area including the design market as well should be determent enough and fight for it's professional level. On a long term, It's better for all of us.

WHERE DO YOU USUALLY SEEK INSPIRATION?

Nature! I love outdoors! That is an endless source that runs my 'brain juices'. But of course, from the other side, as you probably expected to answer it this way, analyzing the progress of logo design area over the internet or in other media on a daily basis is a MUST for every 'serious' logo designer out there, old or new one!
