Feel The Power

Description: Next Logo

The youngest of five, I grew up on a small farm in the west of Ireland and I always had a passion for sketching and drawing. I would sometimes try to recreate the latest movie I had seen in the cinema for instance. I remember recreating the 'Back To The Future' logo title for example. I also recall being intrigued with magazine cover titles and 'CAR' magazine especially. My brother's girlfriend, who was an artist, encouraged me to become a graphic designer when I was about 8 years old. I was always focused from then on to realise my dream.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO WORLD OF LOGO DESIGN?

Logo design was always a passion of mine although I rarely received logo projects when I worked in various design posts. I started my design career in 1995. You have no choice of what projects you have to do when you work for someone else. When I eventually became self employed in 2005 I started to be more involved in logo design.

HOW IMPORTANT IS A LOGO?

Very important. It needs to convey and communicate instantly what can be explained in a thousand words, this is what makes an effective logo. The style needs to be spot on too. Some designers get a logo totally wrong for many reasons although some reasons are out of their control such as the client's requirements or tastes for example.

WHAT MAKES A GREAT LOGO?

A great logo should evoke an emotion. It doesn't necessarily need to be clever either. It just needs to be appropriate.

YOUR FAVOURITE LOGO MADE BY YOU

It would have to be 'Castle Print'.

YOUR FAVOURITE LOGO MADE BY OTHER DESIGNER

'Saxon' by Roy Smith. I was blown away when I first saw this logo mark. I love how the 'a' and 'o' combine to reveal the 'x'. It's just so simple, clever and unique which makes it so memorable.

CHEAP LOGOS: YES OR NO? WHY?

No. Unless it is for a non-profit charity, then yes. A good logo designer worth their salt should value their talent. Logos don't get enough credit of importance considering it is the first thing most viewers will look to when evaluating the company's identity.

WHERE DO YOU USUALLY SEEK INSPIRATION?

Everywhere. Sometimes inspiration comes by chance or accident. The internet is a great source of inspiration for me if I am looking for it though.
